America’s public land comprises national parks, forests, monuments, trails, conservation areas, historic sites, memorials, battlefields, recreation areas, wild and scenic rivers, fish and wildlife refuges and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land.
While the majority of public lands are found out west, they belong to ALL Americans, not just those in the states that host them.
Americans are familiar with National Parks, but most of our public lands are not National Parks, and are used for many purposes- from outdoor recreation to grazing and mining.
From across the political spectrum, many Americans love utilizing these lands (typically at no cost) for camping, hiking, 4x4 adventures, skiing, family outings, hunting, fishing, river running, climbing and the list goes on!
Additionally, recreation and tourism to America’s public land creates hundreds of thousands of jobs and contributes billions of dollars each year to our economy.
In August 2024, Utah launched a lawsuit and marketing campaign targeting millions of acres of America’s public lands for state transfer based on “alternative” legal theories that misrepresent history and the U.S. Constitution.
Once in state hands the tax base to support these lands would drop dramatically, making them vulnerable to being sold into private ownership and closed to the public forever.
A 2020 Transfer of Public Lands Movement study shares the origin of America’s public land, reveals the false narrative developed by pro-transfer proponents, and details the economic impact on the state and the country if America’s public lands are transferred into state ownership.
If you enjoy hiking, hunting, climbing, fishing, or other outdoor activities, America’s public land needs your voice. Share this vital message with everyone you know!
